Berkeley Painting Club - Teen Creative Drawing
Graphic Novel & Zine Lab is for students who love making art and are interested in graphic novels, comics, and zines. Drawing inspiration from independent comics, feminist zine culture, illustration, and contemporary artists, students build drawing, design, and storytelling skills while developing their own ideas and ways of working.

Students work with line, shadow, and tone using sumi ink; color theory with alcohol markers and colored pencils; image and text; composition; and page design. Experimental and mixed-media processes including collage and block printing are also introduced. Projects may include character development and turnarounds, storyboarding, sequential drawing, comics, zines, posters, and artist books.

Demonstrations and structured projects introduce techniques and ideas, with room for students to develop their own projects and build on what they’ve learned. New projects each session make the class appropriate for both new and returning students.

Students can develop projects into finished small editions. The program includes an annual opportunity to share work at a local zine or art book fair or in a one-day gallery exhibition. All supplies are provided.  Taught by Ocean Escalanti an Indigenous visual artist and writer who regularly exhibits at zine and artist book fairs and works as an art facilitator and community programs associate at NIAD Art Center, a progressive art studio serving artists with developmental disabilities.
